Actress and comedian Lily Tomlin is the latest Hollywood star to support efforts to restore the 83-year-old Plaza Theatre in Palm Springs.
“The city of Palm Springs needs to restore one of its most iconic buildings,” Tomlin said in a 55-second video posted Wednesday on the city’s YouTube page.
“The Plaza, which first opened in 1936, is in danger and vitally needs your financial support,” she added. “Join me in this exciting campaign to bring the Plaza back. The restoration cannot happen without you.”
Known for her roles in “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” “9 to 5” and “Grace and Frankie,” Tomlin has appeared on television and the big screen since the late 1960s.
She’s not the only celebrity to support restoration efforts. Councilman J.R. Roberts said Nancy Sinatra will appear in Feburary 2020 for an on-stage conversation at the historic downtown venue where her father once performed.
“Nancy said the only way she would do this was if all the money went to the theater,” Roberts said.
Supporters hope to raise $12 million to restore the theater.
In the video, which first appeared at the State of the City address, Tomlin is sitting in an office with a Mac computer in the background. After appearing on screen, Tomlin later makes a plea to support the restoration efforts as photos and video of the Plaza Theatre are shown.
Tomlin is familiar with the Coachella Valley.
A former Palm Springs resident, Tomlin performed at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert earlier this year. She was also on hand for the Buzz trolley launch in 2014 and presented her wife an award at 2016’s Evening Under the Stars.
