WICHITA, Kan. A historic theater in Wichita could soon have a new purpose.

The Wichita City Council Tuesday approved funding more than $600,000 to help renovate Wichita’s Dunbar Theatre in the 1000 block of North Cleveland. The historic theater closed in the 1960s, but at one time, it was the only movie theater in Wichita available to the city’s African American community.

Neighbors hope revitalizing the Dunbar Theatre will bring new life to the neighborhood with part of the past coming to life.

The non-profit Power Community Development Corporation (Power CDC) hopes to raise about $5 million in private donations and grants to renovate the theater as an African-American themed movie and play house.

Power CDC hopes to see the theatre, built in 1941, renovated and reopened in 2020.
